§ Mr. Simon HughesTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what responsibilities his Department has for (i) conservation, (ii) transport and (iii) welfare of imported wild birds.
§ Mr. MacleanMy Department has no conservation responsibilities in respect of imported wild birds. During transport, the welfare of birds imported into this country is protected by the provisions of the Transit of Animals (General) Order 1973 which also imposes a general duty of care on those involved in the transport of all animals including birds.
The order is enforced by local authorities. Their inspectors can call on the assistance of the state veterinary service whenever welfare or health problems arise. Every commercial consignment of birds imported into this country is inspected on arrival with particular regard to welfare conditions.
