To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is his latest estimate of the cost to the Exchequer per 100,000 unemployed in terms of social security payments.

Mr. Jack

A variation of 100,000 in the number unemployed incurs an estimated additional expenditure of £305 million in social security benefits available to unemployed people in 1991–92.
