Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, if he will list by year for the last 10 years, and for each port in the United Kingdom, the number of tonnes of hazardous waste that was imported.

Information on the importation of waste through ports in the United Kingdom is available only since the introduction of the Transfrontier Shipment of Hazardous Waste Regulations in October 1988.

The information in respect of imports of waste through English ports for financial years 1988–89—October to March only—and 1989–90 is shown in the following table.

The provision of similar information for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland is a matter for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Wales, for Scotland and for Northern Ireland respectively.

1 Figures show the number of dwellings completed by the authority concerned, some of these, particularly for the GLC, were outside the Greater London region.
2 The London County Council (LCC) was replaced by the Greater London Council (GLC) in 1965 and the GLC was abolished in 1986.
