HC Deb 17 June 1991 vol 193 c78W
Mr. Boyes

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the contract with Ferranti-Thomson for development of the type 2075 sonar.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

The Royal Navy's sonar requirements are being rationalised in line with the "Options for Change" decisions on the size and structure of the future submarine fleet. Against this background, I have decided not to proceed with the development of Sonar 2075, which had been intended for a future buy of Upholder class submarines, and the contract with Ferranti Thomson Sonar Systems Ltd. was terminated from 20 May 1991. The company have, however, successfully tendered for the competitive project definition phase for Sonar 2076 which is intended to form the basis of future submarine sonar programmes.
