Mr. David Young

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what specific action he proposes to safeguard the public from breeds of fighting dogs, including the pit bull terrier; and if he will consider banning the importation, breeding and sale of these breeds in the United Kingdom.

[holding answer 20 May 1991]: As the hon. Member will know, the Government have recently introduced the Dangerous Dogs Bill aimed at the control of fighting dogs like the pit bull terrier and Japanese tosa and their eventual elimination from this country. An import ban on these dogs took effect from midnight on 21 May.

trading. The recent decision of the House of Lords to adjourn its consideration of the appeal against the decision of the High Court in the cases of Stoke-on-Trent and Norwich city councils v. B&Q plc in order to seek further clarification of certain aspects of the law from the European Court of Justice has not caused us to alter this stance.
