HC Deb 13 June 1991 vol 192 c659W
Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what assessment he has made of the recent Royal Marine operations in northern Iraq in respect of the operational sufficiency of the number of Sea King helicopters available to the armed forces to fulfil simultaneously commitments in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

The Royal Marines of 3 Commando Brigade are to be congratulated on their achievements in providing relief and assistance to the Kurdish population in northern Iraq. They have been admirably supported by Royal Navy Sea King helicopters which continue to play an important part in this successful operation. Previously, Royal Navy Sea King helicopters were also able to make a substantial contribution during hostilities in the Gulf and they were, in addition, used in support of the recent relief operation in Bangladesh. This exceptional effort was due in no small part to the dedication and professionalism of our armed forces.
