§ Mr. FatchettTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what criteria are used for the determination of capital allocations for those schools which have held grant-maintained status for more than one year.
§ Mr. EggarThe same criteria for determining capital allocations apply to the 29 schools that have been grant maintained for more than a year as those which have entered the sector more recently. All schools receive a formula allocation for small capital works based on their pupil numbers. In addition, all schools can bid for named capital projects. Priority in these allocations has been given to schools' most pressing needs. These include projects related to the health and safety of pupils, and to projects concerned with the introduction of the national curriculum, especially in science and technology.
§ Mr. FatchettTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will set out the capital allocation for each grant-maintained school for(a) 1990–91, where appropriate and (b) 1991–92 and the purpose of each capital allocation.
§ Mr. EggarThe table lists the allocations for named capital projects for grant-maintained schools to begin in the two years. I shall write to the hon. Member when decisions are taken about further allocations for 1991–92.
In addition to named project allocations, each grant-maintained school is eligible to claim an amount of capital grant calculated according to a formula which takes account of the number of pupils on roll. The grant is used for small capital works and the purchase of equipment. For 1990–91 the formula was £13,000 plus £6 per pupil on roll. For 1991–92 the formula is £19,000 plus £9 per pupil on roll.
