§ Mr. Barry FieldTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what studies he has undertaken as to the effect on the price of a gallon or litre of unleaded petrol of the abolition of vehicle excise duty and its transfer to petroleum spirit; and if he will set out the likely retail price based on average pump prices for the last quarter.
§ Mr. ChopeOn the basis of that proposition the estimated increase in unleaded petrol would be 33.2 p a gallon (7.3 p a litre). The pump price (average last quarter) might be about 222 p a gallon (48.7 p a litre). The figures for the last quarter do not include the recent budget duty changes.
