HC Deb 12 June 1991 vol 192 c537W
Mr. Terry Davis

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when the governor of Sudbury prison became aware of the mistake involving a release date for a prisoner who is going to be released on 8 August instead of 8 April; and what action was taken by the governor as a result of becoming aware of this mistake.

Mrs. Rumbold

The governor of Sudbury became aware of the mistake involving the release date of this prisoner on 5 April 1991 and the prisoner in question was granted home leave on compassionate grounds from 8–11 April 1991. The governor has improved the procedures for informing prisoners at Sudbury of the date approved for their release on parole.

Mr. Terry Davis

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps have been taken to apologise to a prisoner at Sudbury prison for the notification of a release date of 8 April instead of 8 August.

Mrs. Rumbold

On discovery of the mistake regarding his release date, the governor apologised to the prisoner concerned for the distress which had been caused.

Mr. Terry Davis

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many mistakes involving release dates for prisoners at Sudbury prison are known to have been made during the last 12 months.

Mrs. Rumbold
