HC Deb 12 June 1991 vol 192 c567W
Sir Patrick McNair-Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of(a) the number of users of British roads who used roads in France in the past year and (b) the number of users of French roads who used roads in the United Kingdom in the past year; and if he will consider an adjustment in motorway speed limits to bring the United Kingdom into line with France.

Mr. Chope

During 1990 approximately 5 million British registered vehicles travelled to France and 1.5 million French registered vehicles travelled to Britain. I am looking at all speed limits, including that on motorways. The motorway speed limit for cars in France is amongst the highest in the European Community; the rate of motorway fatalities is 9.1 per 100 million vehicle kilometres in France whereas in the United Kingdom it is 6.3 per 100 million vehicle kilometres.
