To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on unemployment in southern England.

Mr. Jackson

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rates in April 1991 for the south-east, south-west and East Anglia regions were 6.3 per cent., 6.8 per cent. and 5.5 per cent. of the work force respectively. This compares with 7.6 per cent. for the United Kingdom.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current average unemployment level in the Northern region.

Mr. Jackson

In April 1991, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the Northern region was 10.0 per cent.
