Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will ask the Audit Commission to investigate the decision by Cheshire county council to replace existing road signs marking the county boundary;

(2) if he will ask the Audit Commission to investigate the decision by Cheshire county council to allocate £60,000 to a public relations campaign to promote its image as the local authority.

No. These are matters for the auditor who must undertake his duties in accordance with the Audit Commission's code of audit practice. The code requires the auditor to satisfy himself that the body whose accounts are being audited has made proper arrangements for securing economy, efficiency and effectiveness in its use of resources.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received from the residents of Cheshire about the expenditure by Cheshire county council on public relations campaigns.
