§ Mr. Campbell-SavoursTo ask the Secretary of State for Energy (1) if he will Ball for a report from the chairman of British Nuclear Fuels plc on the circumstances of the illegal entry of two persons into secure areas of the Sellafield plant during the week beginning 20 May;
384W(2) if he will make a statement on the security and health and safety implications for the people of Workington of the break-in to secure areas of the Sellafield site in the week beginning 20 May;
(3) if he will call for a report from the Chief Constable of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority constabulary on the circumstances of the break-in at the Sellafield site during the week beginning 20 May, and on the security implications of these events.
§ Mr. Heathcoat-AmoryBritish Nuclear Fuels plc has kept my officials fully informed of this incident. I understand that in the late evening of Thursday 23 May two demonstrators were detected and apprehended within the Sellafield perimeter fence. BNFL and the UKAEA constabulary are satisfied that no access was gained to sensitive buildings.
All civil nuclear sites employ defence in depth, these include successive layers of protection around sensitive operations and materials. I understand that in this case, only the outermost layers were involved. Security of the installation was, therefore, maintained and there were no health and safety implications for the demonstrators, the Sellafield workers on site or the public.
