HC Deb 06 June 1991 vol 192 c348W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what recent reports he has had from the International Atomic Energy Agency about Iraq's assurances on the amount of fissionable material(a) safely sealed and (b) destroyed during allied bombing; and what proposals Her Majesty's Government have to monitor radiation in the Tuwaitha area.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

[holding answer 3 June 1991]: I have been asked to reply.

An IAEA team visited Iraq from 14–22 May to begin verification of Iraq's statements to the UN of its nuclear holdings. The IAEA has not made public the findings of its initial inspection. A confidential report will be submitted to the agency's board of governors, of which the United Kingdom is a member. Further inspections which may include the monitoring of radiation in the Tuwaitha area will be necessary to fulfil all the requirements of UNSCR 687.
