To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he last met the head of programming at the BBC to discuss subtitles for the deaf.

My right hon. Friend meets representatives of the BBC from time to time to discuss a range of broadcasting issues. However, programming and subtitling are matters for them to determine, within their public service responsibilities.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what measures he has taken to ensure that all polling booths are accessible to disabled people.

I assume that the hon. Gentleman means polling stations rather than polling booths. As he is aware, district and London borough councils in England and Wales have a statutory obligation to place polling stations in buildings which are accessible to disabled people, wherever this is practicable. My officials last wrote to councils in December 1989 to remind them of their duty in this respect and will do so again shortly.
