To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many dog owners have been(a) fined and (b) imprisoned because of attacks by their dogs; what was the average fine or prison sentence in each of the last five years; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 23 Mar 1991]: The latest figures in respect of offences under the Town Police Clauses Act 1847, the Dogs Act 1871 and the Dangerous Dogs Act 1989 are as follows:

[holding answer 23 May 1991]: The Home Office is not routinely informed of attacks by dogs and no statistics about them are collected centrally.
