HC Deb 04 June 1991 vol 192 c168W
Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, pursuant to his answer,Official Report, 21 May, column 405, with regard to the number of jobs created or attracted in urban development corporations, how the figure for Sheffield was calculated; and where the jobs are located.

Mr. Portillo

The figure of 7,787 jobs for Sheffield development corporation is a gross estimate of permanent jobs created or attracted in the UDA, not a net figure as indicated in the answer given in theOfficial Report, 21 May at column 405. The figure is an estimate of jobs in the development corporation's area arising out of private sector developments completed since the corporation was established and an estimate of jobs created as a result of grant support to local firms for business development schemes. The majority of jobs, about 7,000, are at Meadowhall.
