HL Deb 04 June 1991 vol 529 c35WA
Baroness Ewart-Biggs

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they can confirm reports that the Government of Thailand intend deporting thousands of Burmese refugees; if they can estimate the number of refugees involved; and whether they have made representations to the Government of Thailand on this matter.

The Earl of Caithness:

We understand that the Government of Thailand are checking the documentation of Burmese immigrants living in Thailand but have not decided on any return arrangements. The UNHCR are keeping a close eye on developments and the Thai authorities are aware of our concern that no Burmese should be forcibly returned to face persecution in Burma.
