Sir Trevor Skeet

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) to what extent the wind tunnels at Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, and the motion simulator sites have been relegated to the Defence Research Agency; and to what extent he has reserved authority over these facilities;

(2) to what extent the Bedford airfield has been relegated to the Defence Research Agency; and to what extent he has reserved authority over the site.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

[holding answer 23 May 1991]: Ownership of all land occupied by the Defence Research Agency (DRA), including Bedford airfield, the wind tunnel site at Thurleigh, and the motion simulator site, remains vested with the Secretary of State for Defence in his capacity as owner of the DRA. Decisions as to the future of these, and other DRA sites, are a matter for the Secretary of State in consultation with the chief executive of the DRA.
