Mr. Parry

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the latest waiting time for refugees from Somalia to join their families in Liverpool; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The average time between receipt of an application in the asylum division and a decision is about 16 months. This applies to cases of all nationalities. No details are recorded by specific areas of the United Kingdom such as Liverpool.

A total of 1,700 applications for entry clearance from Somalis are awaiting consideration in the Home Office.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will meet the hon. Member for Liverpool, Riverside to discuss the present situation in Somalia and the number of refugees awaiting entry to the United Kingdom.
