HC Deb 03 June 1991 vol 192 cc106-7W
Sir David Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will seek to amend the Employment Protection (Consolidation) Act 1978 to allow the Secretary of State for Employment to award interest payments from the statutory redundancy fund to those whose statutory redundancy claim has been settled in their favour but whose case has taken a considerable time to conclude.

Mr Forth

I have no plans to do so. A major part of the redundancy payment procedure is outside the control of the Department of Employment and interest payments would therefore be inappropriate. Additional resources have been allocated to the redundancy payments service in 1991 and new procedures and equipment have been introduced to improve the speed of payment. These efforts will continue.
