Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) whether he intends to take any action in relation to the Kurdish people in Iraq under article 4 of the International Red Cross conventions of 1949; and if he will make a statement;

(2) whether he has made representations to the Secretary-General of the United Nations as to the application of article 4 of the International Red Cross conventions of 1949 to the Kurdish people in Iraq; and if he will make a statement;

(3) whether he has made representations to the International Red Cross in relation to its responsibilities to the Kurdish people in Iraq under article 4 of the International Red Cross conventions of 1949; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

No. Article 4 of each of the four Geneva conventions merely defines the categories of persons covered by the conventions.

Mr. McFall

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is Her Majesty's Government's policy towards the provision of United Kingdom arms and ammunition to Kurdish fighters inside Iraq.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We are not supplying any arms and ammunition to the Kurds. Any reports that we are doing so are wrong.
