To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what public money has been spent by his Department in each of the last five years for which figures are available to encourage firms involved in gas and oil to relocate all or part of their operations(a) from England and (b) from the rest of Europe; and what assessment he has made of how effective the policy has been.

The attraction of inward investment to Scotland, both from overseas and from the rest of the United Kingdom, is the responsibility of Locate in Scotland which is funded and run jointly by the Scottish Office Industry Department and Scottish Enterprise. The resources expended by Locate in Scotland in fulfilling this role are not allocated, nor capable of being assigned, to particular industrial sectors.
