HC Deb 25 July 1991 vol 195 c821W
Mr. Donald Thompson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what progress has been made in removing hazardous materials and waste from the abandoned whaling stations on South Georgia.

Mr. Garel-Jones

An operation to deal with the problems of potential environmentally damaging materials in the old whaling stations on South Georgia took place from January to May this year. It was funded jointly by the Government of South Georgia and Christian Salvesen plc, who hold the leases to the stations. The work was carried out to specifications laid down by environmental consultants commissioned by the Government of South Georgia, who have now inspected it and approved the success of the operation. Items of historical interest are to be preserved in a South Georgia whaling museum.
