HC Deb 24 July 1991 vol 195 cc633-4W
23. Sir George Gardiner

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on his visit to South Africa.

Mr. Hurd

I heard, at first hand, from a wide variety of political leaders of South Africa's remarkable progress towards non-racial democracy. I encouraged all parties to move quickly to constitutional talks, to agree measures to tackle the violence in the townships and to address the inequalities which remain in South African society.

32. Mr. Hannam

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a statement on his recent visit to South Africa.

Mrs. Chalker

My right hon. Friend heard, at first hand, from a wide variety of political leaders of South Africa's remarkable progress towards non-racial democracy. He encouraged all parties to move quickly to constitutional talks, to agree measures to tackle the violence in the townships and to address the inequalities which remain in South African society.

38. Mr. Ted Garrett

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will seek a report of the visit by the delegation of five parliamentarians from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to South Africa.

Mrs. Chalker

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association delegation which visited South Africa from 8 to 16 July will present a formal report at the CPA's annual congress in September.
