§ Mr. Barry FieldTo ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what consideration he is giving to regulation of the United Kingdom distribution system for new cars, in the light of the single market.
§ Mr. RedwoodOn 9 May 1990 the Director General of Fair Trading made references to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission on the supply of new motor cars and motor car parts. They have been asked to report by 31 October 1991. The Government will consider carefully any recommendations made.
Completion of the single market will not affect directly the distribution system for new cars. European Commission regulation 123/85 on the application of article 85(3) of the EC treaty to certain categories of motor vehicle distribution and servicing agreements applies to the distribution system for new cars in the United Kingdom and other member states of the European Community.
