To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were employed in manufacturing in Scotland in June 1979 and at the latest available date.

In June 1979 there were 604,000 employees in employment in manufacturing industries in Scotland. In March 1991, the latest date for which information is available, there were an estimated 388,000 employees in employment in manufacturing industries in Scotland. In the same period, the number of employees in employment in other industries increased by 69,000, and the number self employed is estimated to have increased by 75,000 in the 11 years since June 1979.
