HC Deb 24 July 1991 vol 195 cc628-9W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of households in Wales contained(a) people living alone, (b) a couple with no children, (c) a couple with dependent children, (d) a couple with non-dependent children and (e) other households in the years 1961, 1971, 1981 and 1989.

Mr. Nicholas Bennett

Available data from the 10 per cent. analyses in the 1961, 1971 and 1981 census reports are given in the following table, together with that from the 1986 Welsh inter-censal survey. There are no equivalent data for 1989. Care should be taken in interpretation as the definition of households and the classification in respect of children—dependent and non-dependent—has varied.

Percentage of all households
1961 1971 1981 1986
(a) One person household 8.8 16.6 20.4 21.1
(b) Married couple without children or others 20.9 23.4 23.6 124.1
(c) and (d) Married couple only with children Of which: 48.4 40.3 37.7 n/a
dependent children only n/a 32.6 24.4 26.2
dependent and non-dependent children n/a n/a 5.6
non-dependent children only n/a n/a 7.7 n/a
(e) Other households 21.9 27.4 18.2 27.8
1 For 1986 a two adult household i.e. not necessarily a married couple.
