Mr. Favell

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his estimate of the cost of the implementation of the latest MacSharry proposals for the reform of the CAP to(a) the Exchequer (i) directly and (ii) channelled via the European institutions, (b) the farming industry and (c) the British consumer.

Mr. Curry

The European Commission's proposals for the reform of the common agricultural policy are long and complex and require considerable technical clarification. The Government have not completed their assessment of the costs and benefits of implementing them.
