HC Deb 24 July 1991 vol 195 cc631-2W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what discussions he has had with the chairman of British Steel on employment in Welsh plants.

Mr. David Hunt

[holding answer 23 July 1991]: British Steel keeps me fully informed of developments at its Welsh plants and is in close touch with my officials. I have corresponded with Sir Robert Scholey on this question.

I have today visited the British Steel plant at Port Talbot where I had the opportunity to discuss this issue among many other matters. I am naturally anxious to maximise employment throughout the Welsh economy, including the steel industry, however employment levels in Welsh plants are a matter for the commercial judgment of British Steel.
