HC Deb 24 July 1991 vol 195 cc569-71W
Mr. Fatchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the inspections of schools which form part of the assisted places scheme carried out in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Mr. Fallon

The inspection of independent schools by Her Majesty's inspectorate forms part of a planned programme under which all such schools are looked at over a period of about seven years. In the case of schools in the assisted places scheme, Her Majesty's inspectorate is also consulted prior to their admission into the scheme. Participating schools have to satisfy stringent criteria for admission and monitoring of their academic achievements is carried out on a regular basis.

Mr. Fatchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list by each individual school which forms part of the assisted places scheme examination results by subject at GCSE and at A-level.

Mr. Fallon

Examination results by main subject at individual schools are not immediately available, but the last annual survey of assisted places schools' GCSE and A-level examination results for the academic year 1989–90, shows that, for that year, 90 per cent. of GCSE entries by assisted pupils resulted in grades A to C, with 45 per cent. achieving grade A and 33 per cent. achieving grade B. Ninety per cent. of A-level entries resulted in grades A to E, with nearly 29 per cent. achieving grade A and 25 per cent. achieving grade B.

Mr. Fatchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list those schools which have been refused inclusion in the assisted places scheme.

Mr. Fallon

Schools are selected for the assisted places scheme not only on the basis of a sound academic standard but also with regard to geographical location and the desirability of securing an equitable distribution of places between girls and boys.

The table lists those schools that have, as yet, not been successful in gaining admission into the assisted places scheme for any of the above reasons.
