HL Deb 23 July 1991 vol 531 c47WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their position in respect of the Security Council proposal that the Middle East should become a Nuclear Free Zone.

Lord Cavendish of Furness

We are in favour of such a zone in principle if it is designed to enhance regional peace and security and if such a zone is acceptable to all states in the region. We believe this is best achieved through all states in the region acceding to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and placing their nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.
