HC Deb 22 July 1991 vol 195 c362W
Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he discussed nuclear matters during his recent visit to South Africa.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Yes. During my right hon. Friend's discussions, the recent decision by South Africa to accede to the non-proliferation treaty was raised. He made clear our warm welcome for this step.

Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is Her Majesty's Government's policy in respect of the accession by the Government of South Africa to the nuclear nonproliferation treaty.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We warmly welcome South Africa's recent accession to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. This important step will serve to strengthen the treaty which is a pillar of our hopes for peace and security, both in southern Africa and internationally. We hope that South Africa's accession will set an example to all states which have yet to accede to the treaty.
