asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will allow historical and preservation societies to investigate the existence of grave-sites on the battlefield of Naseby which may lie in the path of the proposed A. 1-M.1 link road in the vicinity and, if they are found, whether Her Majesty's Government agree that in the national interest the road should be rerouted south of the village to avoid disturbing these burial grounds.

The decision to proceed with the northern route was taken in the knowledge of written evidence presented to the public inquiry in 1984–85 that Civil War burials took place at Sulby Hedges, well to the north of the line of the link road. There will be oppportunities for all types of archaeological survey during construction works. The discovery at any time of human remains would require
