To ask the Secretary of State for Health what has been the change, in absolute and percentage terms, in midwifery staff in the United Kingdom since 1979.

Between September 1979 and 1990 the total number of midwifery staff, including student midwives, employed in the NHS in England increased by 3,620 wholetime equivalents—an increase of 18 per cent.
