HC Deb 22 July 1991 vol 195 cc352-3W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of Britain's gross domestic product is spent on education.

Mr. Eggar

Gross domestic product is calculated on a United Kingdom basis. Provisional outturn data indicate that central Government and local authority expenditure in the United Kingdom on education and science in 1990–91 was 4.9 per cent. of the gross domestic product for that year.
