To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what action he has taken since September 1990 to promote the wider use of combined heat and power.

Earlier this year my Department successfully completed the privatisation of the electricity supply industry in Great Britain, thereby enhancing the market opportunities for independent power projects, including combined heat and power. The Energy Efficiency Office continues actively to promote CHP through its best practice programme. It also works closely with the Combined Heat and Power Association and has recently collaborated with it on the power plus initiative.
