HC Deb 22 July 1991 vol 195 c404W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what research he is supporting into the causes and pattern of incidence of asthma and related conditions.

Mr. Dorrell

The main agency through which the Government support biomedical and clinical research in the United Kingdom is the Medical Research Council, which receives its grant-in-aid from the Department of Education and Science. In 1989–90, the latest year for which figures are available, the MRC spent £911,000 on asthma-related research.

The Department is also supporting a randomised controlled trial concerned with improvement in general practice services to patients with asthma.
