The Interim Licensing Authority for Human in vitro Fertilisation and Embryology, which administers a voluntary licensing system, records in its 1991 report that 50 infertility treatment centres have now been licensed. It states that— One newly wholly NHS centre, the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, has been approved, taking the total number of clinics wholly funded by the NHS to three; 28 centres are wholly private and the remaining 19 make use of some NHS facilities or receive partial funding from the NHS.
