HC Deb 18 July 1991 vol 195 cc278-9W
24. Mr. Gill

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will make a statement on the current position regarding the marking of food products with their country of origin.

Mr. Curry

The EC food labelling directive, which is implemented in the United Kingdom by the Food Labelling Regulations 1984, requires the place of origin or provenance to be shown where failure to give such particulars might mislead the consumer to a material degree. It also requires that the name of the food must be sufficiently precise to enable the product to be distinguished from any other with which it might be confused. Information on country or place of origin may be given voluntarily so long as it is true and not misleading.
