HC Deb 17 July 1991 vol 195 cc163-4W
Dr. Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the process of consultation for appointing the assistant parliamentary boundary commissioners; and what progress has been made to date.

Mrs. Rumbold

My right hon. Friend has been asked by the Boundary Commission for England to appoint a panel of about 60 assistant commissioners in connection with the fourth general review of constituencies in England, which began in February. The commission put forward a list of 110 distinguished lawyers compiled by writing to heads of chambers and the Lord Chancellor's Department inviting suggestions.

The Home Office is now in the process of consulting the Lord Chancellor's Department over biographical information about the nominees. Final decisions about which of the nominees should be invited to serve will be made in due course.
