HC Deb 15 July 1991 vol 195 c35W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what consideration he has given to setting up a modern animal disposal facility at Lincoln with individuals or companies prepared to run one on a contract basis.

Mr. Maclean

My Ministry has contracts with a number of private companies for the incineration of suspect bovine spongiform encephalopathy carcases. In general, however, it is up to the agricultural sector, as with other industries, to deal with the waste it creates. A number of companies have plans to construct purpose-built incineration plants to handle fallen animals and other animal waste.

Mr. Morley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will give details of the proposed van collection for dead animals and samples following the closure of the Lincoln veterinary investigation centre; whether the van will be refrigerated; whether it can carry full carcases; how many vehicles will be provided; and what response time farmers can expect from their initial request.

Mr. Maclean

The details of the proposed van service will be fully discussed with local veterinary surgeons before the closure of the Lincoln veterinary investigation centre.
