HC Deb 12 July 1991 vol 194 c521W
Sir Russell Johnston

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will set out the position adopted by each EC country, including the United Kingdom, at the last meeting of the Council of Ministers regarding the recognition of Croatia and Slovenia as independent sovereign states; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Under the Brioni agreement of 7–8 July Slovenia and Croatia have agreed to suspend for three months implementation of their declarations of independence. EC Foreign Ministers met in The Hague on 10 July and confirmed their support for the Brioni agreement. The EC has also agreed to support constitutional talks aimed at meeting the aspirations of all Yugoslavia's peoples.
