HL Deb 11 July 1991 vol 530 c97WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the value at 1988 prices of the Social Fund per person registered unemployed in May 1991.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Social Security (Lord Henley)

Social Fund expenditure in May 1991 was £11.35 per person registered as unemployed, which is equivalent to £9.25 at 1988 prices. These figures are equivalent to £136.20 and £111.00 respectively at an annual rate.

However it is not the number of registered unemployed that is relevant for Social Fund purposes since payments from the fund are, for the most part, available only to people who are in receipt of Income Support or, in the case of funeral payments and maternity grants, one of the other qualifying benefits.
