To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many deaths took place in national health service hospitals in(a) Strathclyde and (b) Scotland as a whole with the principal diagnosis relating to alcohol abuse or misuse for each year since 1979.

The figures requested are set out in the table. The causes of death included have been selected by the Registrar General as being the most relevant, based on current medical advice, and are shown below the table.
