To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the remuneration and expenses agreed for the chairman of the second strand of the talks at Stormont, Sir Ninian Stephen; and what proportion will be contributed by(a) the Government of the Republic of Ireland and (b) Her Majesty's Government.

I refer the right hon. Gentleman to the statement that I made in the House on 3 July 1991 at columns 319–20.

As the talks which were held on the basis of my statement of 26 March 1991 have now concluded without the second strand having commenced, these questions do not arise.
