HC Deb 09 July 1991 vol 194 cc321-2W
Mr. Darling

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the 1991–92 grant to UKIAS; and what is the proposed grant in 1992–93.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The Home Office grant-in-aid to UKIAS for 1991–92 set at the beginning of the year amounted to £1,467 million. The further amounts to be paid in this and subsequent years as a result of the announcement made by my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary on 2 July will be determined in the light of discussions with the organisation.

Mr. Darling

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what discussions he has had with UKIAS with a view to that organisation providing legal advice and assistance in respect of immigration and asylum cases.

Mr. Fraser

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment he has made of whether the proposed additional resources for UKIAS will enable that organisation to send representatives to interviews with immigration officers, to provide interpreters, to obtain medical reports and to attend police stations and posts in relation to political asylum cases.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

In the light of the announcement made by my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary on 2 July, Home Office officials are discussing with UK LAS the implications for its workload and organisation and the extra resources needed. Those discussions include the range of additional functions which the service will be asked to undertake as a result of the changes announced last week.
