To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proportion of Army recruits comes from(a) Wales, (b) England, (c) Scotland, (d) Northern Ireland and (e) elsewhere.

In 1990–91, the proportion of regular Army recruits from each country was:

  1. (a) Wales 7.0 per cent.;
  2. (b) England 79.0 per cent.;
  3. (c) Scotland 11.0 per cent.;
  4. (d) Northern Ireland 2.0 per cent.; and
  5. (e) Elsewhere 1.0 per cent.
