HC Deb 08 July 1991 vol 194 cc280-1W
Mr. Hind

To ask the Secretary of State for Health when he granted a licence to the manufacturers of RU486 for sale and use of the drug in the United Kingdom; and if he will publish the conditions attached to the licence.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The licence for mifepristone (RU486) was granted on 1 July 1991 as a prescription-only medicine with the following clinical indication: Medical alternative to surgical termination of intra-uterine pregnancy of up to 63 days gestation based on the first day of the last menstrual period and/or ultrasound scan.

Its use is restricted to NHS hospitals and places approved by the Secretary of State under section 1(3) of the Abortion Act 1967.

I have today placed copies of the company's data sheet in the Library.
