To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many(a) men and (b) women are currently unemployed in Congleton; and what percentage these figures represent of the local work force.

In May 1991 the number of unemployed claimants, not seasonally adjusted, in the Congleton parliamentary constituency was 1,403 males and 654 females.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many(a) men and (b) women have been employed in Congleton in each of the past 12 years for which figures are available.

Employment estimates for parliamentary constituencies are available only from the censuses of employment taken in 1981, 1984, 1987 and 1989. Data for the Congleton constituency are given in the table below. The estimates relate only to employees in employment; they exclude the self-employed and members of Her Majesty's forces.

In the parliamentary constituency of Congleton, unemployment, not seasonally adjusted, increased by 769 or 59.7 per cent. in the 12 months to May 1991.
